On Tuesday, May 1st, 2012 the Program Committee welcomed a wine dinner event that took place at The Metropolitan Opera Club where we tasted some selections from the smaller, artisanal wineries of Italy.
Among the participating wineries were Sada, Sapaio, San Sano, La Castella, Terre Nobili, and Borgo Maragliano. Also, present at the evening was Mr. Pietro Romani, President of ID Beverage Group and Mario Franchi, VP of ID Beverage Group, in which they walked us through the pairing of these magical wines...

Dinner Details
Prosecco di Valdobbiadene
was a good way to open the evening in this beautiful room in prelude of the opera "The Makaropulos Case". This Prosecco produced by La Castella was creamy, soft and bubbly with floral notes. A second choice was offered by an out casted Extra Dry Brut South African Sparkling Rose, which was more on the dry side with notes of petal roses. The first course; a well prepared dish of Sea Scallops Oreganata, was paired with a Vermentino of Bolgheri by Sada; fresh and fruity with flavors and aromas of green apple, grapefruit and a touch of honey. Next to the Vermentino was a Pinot Grigio by Terre Nobili from Grave, Friuli; well balanced with hints of citrus and tropical fruit with a smooth finish.
The Entree consisted of a Filet Mignon paired with two super Tuscans, Sapaio Volpolo 2009 a magic Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. This wine was luscious with notes of dry-cherry and spicy floral scents and a broad texture as well as fleshy tannins finish that was put to test with San Sano Borro al Fumo 2005; a well-structured blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon showing layers of oak and red berries.
During the first interval of the opera, a cheese plate was served with two selections of cheeses: aged Parmigiano Reggiano and Brie. The pairing with a Chianti Classico Riserva 2006 by San Sano, was perfect; showing intense notes of red cherries and layers of tobacco; this was a good example
Sangiovese varietal at is best! A lemon tart was served as dessert, it was paired with a glass of El Calie, Mosto d'Uva by Borgo Maragliano, a Moscato d'Asti product, showing notes of peaches and apricot. Very refreshing and balanced on the palate.
